A Cut Key Is Not Enough

If your car has a chip, the key must also be programmed or the engine will not start. A Toyota owner manual says its keys have built in transponder chips that stop the engine if the key has not been registered in the car's computer. A shop that only cuts the blade can hand you a key that opens the door and does not start the car.

Dealer or Locksmith

A dealer works at its shop, so a car with no key may need a tow. A mobile locksmith comes to the car. Whichever you call, ask for one price that covers the trip, the key, the cutting and the programming.
